Economic Development Fact Sheets
Reports The Latino community's contribution to the state's economy and business development sector is plentiful and growing year after year, especially within the small business industry. The Council is hopeful that the state of Minnesota will continue to see this upward trend in business development and contribution to the state's growing surplus. In order to supplement the increases of Latino businesses state wide, the Council will continue to offer guidance and referral services to ensure economic successes. Additionally, the Council will: Bring awareness and educate Latinos on the methods of business development and training; Support the initiatives of community organizations, such as the Latino Economic Development Center, that are committed to help open and build Latino businesses; Engage other key economic players and supporters of business development, such as the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Continue to build our partnership with the Minnesota Small Business Assistance Office at the Department of Employment and Economic Development to ensure bilingual guides and material on how to start up a business in the state; Explore various methods to determine the needs of the Latino business community; Monitor the impact and contributions of Latino businesses to the state.
Economic Development Roundtable CLAC and MEDA Convened Latino Economic Development Roundtable
On Thursday July 16, 2009 the Chicano Latino Affairs Council (CLAC) in partnership with Metropolitan Economic Development Association convened a meeting of economic and workforce development experts that attracted 23 participants. In the midst of an economic downturn that is significantly affecting the Latino community, the main goal of this meeting was to start a conversation on Latino contributions to the state economy, as well as to identify barriers and opportunities to improve business growth and job creation. Representatives of local, state and federal government assembled with Latino economic agency leaders in identifying barriers for Latino and minority economic growth as well as actionable strategies to increase the Latino presence in utilizing both business development and workforce resources. The meeting concluded with the creation of a task force on economic development to guide CLAC’s efforts throughout its economic research initiative.
