For the first time in recent history, CLAC visited the Willmar Latino community on July 19, 2007. In terms of numbers, the city of Willmar has one of the third highest Latino populations outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro-area. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000 indicate that the Latino population represented 15.9 percent of the total population. Based on the referenced study, there is a good base of Latino leadership in the community. During CLAC’s visit to Willmar in July 2007, city officials stated the rapid and continued growth of the Latinos in the area, as well as other ethnic groups from East Africa.  Additionally, city leaders recognized the contributions that Latinos have brought to community, such as capacity to a growing economy, cultural vitality and awareness, and economic and workforce development. According to Representative Al Juhnke,  Latinos are filling the demographic vacuum created by an ageing and emigrant population. Jennie-O Turkey processor remains the largest employer of Willmar Latinos. Other Latinos are involved with the service industry and a few entrepreneurs have made the successful transition to small businesses.
