For the first time in recent history, CLAC visited the Moorhead Latino community in the upper western part of the state on August 9-10th 2007. This was the third and last scheduled visit of summer 2007 and completes the pilot series of community forums.
During the two-day trip, CLAC staff sought to raise awareness of both the Latino contributions to the Moorhead community conjointly with areas for growth which directly impact Latino quality of life. In an effort to reach the entire media community CLAC was able to secure media coverage with a Fargo-Moorhead news channel. Rogelio Muñoz was interviewed about CLAC’s history, purpose and reason for visits. Reporters were also present at the CLAC sponsored community forum, held at Centro Cultural de Fargo-Moorhead with the collaboration of Nelson Lozano, Executive Director for the Centro.
Among the many meetings, CLAC staff met with Moorhead Mayor Mark Voxland, Assistant Superintendent Lynn Kovash of Moorhead Public Schools, Concordia College Vice-President for Admissions Omar Correa, and Migrant Health Services Director Joan Altenbernd.
In contrast to other Mexican or Central-American Latino clusters in Minnesota, the Moorhead-Fargo area is historically populated by Latinos of Texan-descent which immigrated to the Red River Valley area after World War II in order to work on the extensive sugar beet farms. A significant percentage of these Texan-Latinos originated from the Crystal City, Texas area. Many of them still migrate between Moorhead and Crystal City and other South Texan communities. Nonetheless, after three generations of Latinos in Moorhead, these new Minnesotanos continue to face challenges with basic necessities such as adequate and affordable housing, education and health.
